7 Tips for Seafarer Wives to Steer Financial Conversations with Husband

Welcome aboard my fellow seafarer wives!

Are you finding it challenging to establish open and effective financial communication with your husband? Many seafarer wives encounter this challenge due to the unique nature of our husband’s profession, which often involves long periods of being away from home. In this blog post, we’ll explore seven practical communication strategies tailored to the unique challenges faced by seafarer wives. Drawing wisdom from God and His Word, let’s steer together towards smoother conversations and stronger financial unity.

1. Start with a Compassionate Heart:

Approach financial discussions with empathy and understanding towards your spouse’s perspective.

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Proverbs 15:1

Choose your words carefully and seek to listen with an open heart, fostering an environment of mutual respect and compassion.

2. Set Sail Together with Shared Goals:

Anchor your financial discussions in shared goals and dreams for the future. Sometimes, it is really hard to agree and be on the same page with your spouse but Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 emphasizes the strength of unity, stating, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”

By aligning your financial aspirations, you can work together towards a common destination, strengthening your bond as a couple.

3. Navigate with Transparency and Honesty:

Maintain open and honest communication about your financial situation, including income, expenses, and debts. Proverbs 11:3 says:

“The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.”

Transparency builds trust and fosters a sense of security within your marriage, allowing you to navigate financial challenges with integrity.

4. Weather Storms with Patience and Understanding:

During difficult financial times, practice patience and understanding towards each other’s emotions and concerns. Don’t blame each other because both of you are not perfect. Blaming and worrying will accomplish nothing. Instead, fix your eyes on Jesus during hard times because He is the One who can get you out of the pit that your in. Encourage one another and build each other up. James 1:19 encourages us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

By cultivating patience and empathy, you can weather financial storms together, emerging stronger and more united as a couple.

5. Chart Your Course with Regular Check-Ins:

Schedule regular check-ins to review your financial progress and adjust your course as needed. You can use Google Sheets for managing your finances because it is accessible from any device and you can collaborate in real-time making your finances easier to track and manage. By staying informed and proactive, you can prevent potential conflicts and navigate towards your financial goals more effectively.

Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds.

Proverbs 27:23

6. Seek Wise Counsel and Guidance:

Improve your financial literacy and don’t hesitate to seek outside counsel or professional guidance when needed. Proverbs 15:22 reminds us, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers, they succeed.” Whether it’s consulting a financial planner or seeking advice from trusted mentors, gathering wisdom from others can provide valuable insights and support for your financial journey.

7. Express Gratitude and Appreciation:

Make it a habit to show gratitude and appreciation for each other’s contributions and efforts in managing finances no matter how small it is. By acknowledging each other’s strengths and contributions, you can cultivate a spirit of unity and cooperation in your financial discussions.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Philippians 2:3-4
