Passing Down Faith: Nurturing Our Children’s Hearts with God’s Word

Today, I want to dive into a powerful passage from the book of Deuteronomy that speaks to the importance of teaching our children about God’s Word.

In Deuteronomy 6:1-9, Moses implores the Israelites to diligently teach God’s commandments to their children, impressing them upon their hearts and souls. This timeless wisdom is just as relevant for us today as it was thousands of years ago. So, let’s explore how we can intentionally pass down our faith to our children and protect them from the negative influences of the world. First off, let’s break down what Deuteronomy 6:1-9 is all about. In this passage, Moses instructs the Israelites to love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul, and strength, and to impress God’s commandments upon their children. Let’s use age-appropriate resources and activities to make learning about God fun and engaging for our little ones.

And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.  And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.

3. Make God’s Word a Priority: Just as Moses instructed the Israelites to talk about God’s Word in every aspect of life, prioritize regular times of Bible study, prayer, and worship as a family. Let’s create sacred moments where you can gather together to read Scripture, pray, and discuss its relevance to your lives.

4. Seize Teachable Moments: Life is full of teachable moments—whether it’s a beautiful sunset, a challenging situation at school, or a moment of triumph or disappointment. Let’s use these opportunities to point our children back to God’s Word and His faithfulness. In Deuteronomy 6:7, it says, “Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Let’s take advantage of everyday moments to instill God’s truth into our children’s hearts.

Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.

Stay Connected and Engaged: In today’s digital age, it’s essential to stay connected and engaged in our children’s lives because there are a lot of available influences online and most of them are bad. Let’s take an active interest in their hobbies, friendships, and online activities, and be proactive about discussing the influence of the internet and social media on their lives. Let’s equip them with discernment and wisdom to navigate the digital world with confidence and integrity.

6. Create a Safe and Nurturing Environment: As parents, we have the responsibility to create a safe and nurturing environment where our children can grow and thrive spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Surround them with positive influences, both offline and online, and be vigilant about protecting them from harmful content and influences.

7. Pray Without Ceasing: Finally, never underestimate the power of prayer. Let’s lift our children up to God daily, praying for their protection, wisdom, and spiritual growth. In Jeremiah 29:11, it says, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Trust that God has a plan and purpose for our children’s lives and pray for His guidance and protection every step of the way.

Dear parents, let’s heed the wisdom of Deuteronomy 6:1-9 and be intentional about passing down our faith to our children.
