Trusting God Amidst Wars and Rumors of Wars

Something that’s been weighing heavily on the hearts and minds of many young people today is anxiety. With wars and rumors of wars dominating the headlines and uncertainty looming over the future, it’s no wonder that our children and teens are feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

But as parents, we have the incredible opportunity to speak truth and hope into their lives, reminding them that they don’t have to fear or worry about the future because God’s got them in the palm of His hand.

In Matthew 6:34, Jesus tells us, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” These words of wisdom from our Savior serve as a powerful reminder that worrying about the future accomplishes nothing. Instead, we are called to trust in God’s provision and sovereignty, knowing that He holds our tomorrows in His hands.

So, how can we as parents help our children conquer their fears and anxieties in the midst of wars and rumors of wars? Here are some practical tips and encouragement to guide you:

1. Create a Safe Space for Open Communication

Let our children know that it’s okay to talk about their fears and anxieties with us. Create a safe and non-judgmental space where they can share their thoughts and feelings openly, knowing that we’re here to listen and support them.

2. Speak Truth and Encouragement

Let’s remind our children of God’s promises and faithfulness, even in the midst of uncertainty.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11

We need to encourage them to hold onto these truths and trust in God’s good plans for their lives.

3. Model Trust and Faith

Children learn by example, so let our own trust and faith in God shine through in our words and actions. Let’s show them what it looks like to lean on God in times of uncertainty and trust in His provision and protection.

4. Pray Together

Prayer is a powerful weapon against anxiety and fear. Let us take time to pray with our children, lifting up their concerns and worries to God and asking for His peace and guidance. In Philippians 4:6-7, it says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

5. Focus on What You Can Control

In times of uncertainty, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by things that are beyond our control. Let us encourage our children to focus on what they can control—such as their thoughts, attitudes, and actions—and to trust God with the rest.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:5-6

6. Limit Exposure to Negative News and Read the Bible

While it’s important to stay informed about what’s happening in the world, constant exposure to negative news and media can fuel anxiety and fear. Let us encourage our children to take breaks from social media and news outlets and focus on Jesus and His promises instead.

For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope and overflow with confidence in His promises.

Romans 15:4

7. Encourage Gratitude and Mindfulness

Let us cultivate a spirit of gratitude and mindfulness in our children today by encouraging them to focus on the present moment, to count their blessings and to fix their eyes on Jesus who is faithful to all His promises.

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Let us help them see the goodness and love of God that surrounds them, even in the midst of uncertainty. Jesus is holding us in the palm of His hand. We are always safe inside His love.

As we conquer the challenges of raising our children in a world filled with fears, doubts and anxiety of being uncertain what the future holds, let’s fix our eyes to the one who holds our future and cling to the promise of God’s peace and provision. By speaking truth, modeling trust, and leaning on God in prayer, we can help our children find peace and hope in the midst of uncertainty. And remember, we serve a God who is greater than any fear or anxiety we may face. In Him, we can find refuge and strength, knowing that His love never fails and His plans for us are always great. It’s going to be better and brighter each day for all of us who love God. We will never be shaken as we put out hope in Him.
